(Football news) Blackburn have caused a major upset as they dumped Premier League side Leicester out of the FA Cup, winning their fifth-round tie 2-1 at the King Power and reaching the quarter-finals for the first time since 2015. Goals from Tyrhys Dolan and Sammie Szmodics as they cashed in on awful defending to upset the 2021 winners. Brendan Rodgers celebrated four years in charge at the King Power Stadium and this defeat marked his 200th game.

Blackburn Rovers seized on every mistake to punish the hosts and maintained their composure as Leicester did try to make a comeback, with Daniel Amartey hitting the post. Leicester City made six changes, including a first start for Ricardo Pereira since May 2022 after his recovery from injuryAmartey’s attempt to play out from the back was reckless and as Tyrhys Dolan took advantage of it and beat Iversen from the edge of the box. Leicester’s defending became calamitous immediately after the goal and they fell behind seven minutes into the second half.

Ryan Hedges should have doubled their lead but he couldn’t as he had robbed Boubakary Soumare off the ball on the edge of his own box. But minutes later Sam Gallagher’s strong tackle on Lukw Thomas saw the striker find Szmodics on the edge of the box, there was plenty for him to do but he bullied his way past Amartey and Pereira to gently finish it into the corner. Leicester’s man of the match was their reserve goalkeeper Iversen as his save kept Szmodics from making it 3-0.

Blackburn Rovers grew in confidence and were more determined to finish the match, but out of the blue the Foxes pulled a goal back with 23 minutes left. Harvey Barnes found space for the and pulled it back for Iheanacho to score from close range. The Blackburn goalkeeper Pears made a brilliant save as he denied the striker. With time ticking away Amartey’s header hit the post in stoppage time as Blackburn caused a major upset in the FA Cup. Blackburn will face Sheffield United next as they look to earn direct promotion into the Premier League next season.
