Bayern Munich suffered a surprising loss to RB Leipzig as the title race is wide open

(Football news) Bayern Munich blew the title race wide open as they suffered a surprising 3-1 to RB Leipzig on Saturday at the Allianz Arena. The result meant that it is going to be advantage Dortmund in the final week of the Bundesliga. The Bavarian giants seemed to be cruising when they went ahead with Serge Gnabry but they took their foot off the gas and conceded three goals in the second half as new confirmed Bayern player for next season Konrad Laimer scored and two penalties from Christopher Nkunku and Dominik Szoboszlai, sealed third place for them.

Bayern, who are suffering from their worst season in a decade have only the league title left to fight for after they got eliminated from the German Cup and Champions League in the quarter-finals after the arrival of Thomas Tuchel in March. Bayern dropped down to second spot on 68 points while Dortmund’s 3-0 win over Augsburg made sure that they moved to the top of the Bundesliga standings with 70 points and the Ruhr valley club go into next week’s season finale in the driving seat.

Leipzig’s victory meant that it guaranteed them third place and a Champions League spot next season. Bayern have a tough task next week against Cologne next week while Dortmund are at Signal Iduna Park against Mainz. The Bavarians are chasing a record-extending 11th consecutive league title as Gnabry gave the home fans to cheer when he scored in the 25th minute but their defence completely became complacent, giving Leipzig too much space and which allowed to create several chances as they had their keeper Yann Sommer to thank for making three fine stops.

Bayern’s complacency and sluggishness in the 65th when Laimer fired in the equaliser from a deflected pass. Leipzig then completed the much deserved turnaround in the 76th after Nkunku was brought down in the penalty box and the soon to be Chelsea player beat Sommer and silenced the Bayern fans. The day went bad to worse for Bayern as they gave away a second penalty in the 85th minute when Szoboszlai stepped up and made sure of the three points for the visitors.
