(Football news) Bayern Munich got back to winning ways in the Bundesliga as they scored three times in a stellar 10-minute spell in the first half to win against Wolfsburg 4-2 on Sunday. Bayern went into the match with the club officials locked in a public spat with Manuel Neuer over the sacking of his close friend, goalkeeping coach Toni Tapalovic last week and three consecutive 1-1 draws since the season restarted in January which has opened the title race wide open.
Bayern will face Paris Saint-Germain in nine days in the Champions League Round of 16 and were desperate to get in form before the big match. Against Wolfsburg it took them only nine minutes to score as Kingsley Coman’s cross flew past Wolfsburg keeper Koen Casteels and into the far corner after Thomas Mueller failed to connect in front of goal. Coman doubled the advantage with a second goal in the 14th minute as the France winger thundered in a volley at the far post from an inch perfect cross from Joao Cancelo. Bayern quickly made it 3-0 five minutes later as Muller equalled Gerd Mueller’s all-time club record for the player with the most Bundesliga appearance as the German international appeared in his 427th Bundesliga match
The Bavarian giants took their foot of the gas which allowed Wolfsburg to get back into the match. Bayern were punished for their complacency when Jakub Kaminski caught the visitors’ defence napping with a quick one-two and a very good finish. Things got worse after the break with Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich being sent off for a second booking for the first time in his Bundesliga career but the Wolves missed some golden chances through Mattias Svanberg and Baku Ridle to level the scores.
Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann was fuming for his team’s defensive frailties before Jamal Musiala settled everyone’s nerves with a superb solo effort in the 73rd minute. Svanberg did score a second goal for Wolfsburg and cut the deficit eight minutes later. Later in the match, new Bayern goalkeeper Yann Sommer saved some shots in stoppage-time as the visitors held on for a win to move up to 40 points which is subsequently one above second-placed Union Berlin while Borussia Dortmund are third on 37 points.
