(Football news) Barcelona and Jordi Alba have mutually agreed to terminate his contract a season early and the 34 year old will leave the club at the end of the season. The left back joined Barcelona from Valencia in 2012, winning six La Liga titles, five Copa del Rey trophies and the Champions League in 2015. He made 258 appearances, including 29 this season and won the La Liga with the Catalan club. Barcelona will also see another veteran in captain Sergio Busquets leave the club this summer.

A statement released by Barcelona read “FC Barcelona would like to publicly express its gratitude to Alba for his professionalism, commitment and dedication, and his ever-positive and friendly relationship with all members of the Barca family, and wishes him every fortune in the future. Barca will always be a home for you, Jordi.” The Catalan club are reshaping their squad to meet La Liga’s financial fair play rules and are hoping to re-sign Lionel Messi, who will be a free agent in the summer.

Last summer, Barcelona sold shares of their future television rights and media production unit Barca Studios in order to register four new signings. The club were also forced to offload a number of players in order to register the new signings, including defender Jules Kounde, who signed from Sevilla. The gamble paid off, as Barcelona won the LaLiga, breaking Real Madrid’s dominance and with Messi potentially signing this summer, a Champions League title next year could be a realistic possibility.
