(Football news) Barcelona were held to a goalless draw at home by Girona. Xavi’s men were looking to bounce back after a 4-0 home defeat to Real Madrid in the Copa Del Rey but things didn’t go to plan. On top of that they had a chance to go 15 points clear on top of La Liga but they have to settle for a 13 point lead. The result as such doesn’t affect the La Liga title race as it will still take a miracle for Barcelona to bottle the League. It does affect the confidence of the team and it will definitely put a couple of players out on the transfer market. 

Xavi started the game with Franck Kessie, Ferran Torres, Jordi Alba and Marcos Alonso on the bench. Ansu Fati started the game as did Eric Garcia and Sergi Roberto. Girona started the game really well as they had a a good chance to open the scoring. Soon Barcelona started to take control of the game as Robert Lewandowski hit the bar and drew a save in quick succession. Raphinha created 3 incredible opportunities to break the deadlock but Girona held on to the 0-0 scoreline at half time. Both teams had a couple of good chances to get the opening goal but the match ended in a draw.

Barcelona’s next game is against Getafe away from home. Xavi could use this period to try out some players to identify the team for next season. If Lionel Messi is to return next season someone will have to make way for him. Ferran Torres and Ansu Fati are currently two players who could be sold at the end of the season. Eric Garcia is another player who has been under a lot of scrutiny for his performances. Sergio Busquets’ contract runs out at the end of the season and it is still unclear whether he will sign a new deal or not.
