Barcelona and Atlético Madrid score late winners while Real Madrid drop points

(Football news) It was a very interesting week full of drama in La Liga. Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona all scored late goals to salvage points. Real Madrid bottled the chance to go 6 points clear of 2nd placed Sevilla.

Atletico Madrid got a dramatic 3-2 win against Valencia. Yunus Musah and Hugo Duro scored 2 goals in the first half to put the visitors in a comfortable position. Luis Suarez missed a couple of big chances that came his way. In the 64th minute Matheus Cunha finally pulled one back just 7 minutes after coming on. Angel Correa and Mario Hermoso scored in injury time to get Atlético Madrid 3 very important points. Atleti needed this win and it has come at the right time just before the short break. Now Diego Simeone can regroup his men and then go again after the break when he'll hopefully have his injured players back. Their next game is against FC Barcelona who are just 1 point behind in the league table.

Real Madrid once again dropped against a bottom half team as they drew 2-2 at home against Elche. Los Blancos were pretty much in control of the game. Vinicius Jr won a penalty in the 34th minute but Karim Benzema blasted it over the bat. Things got worse as Lucas Boye gave Elche the lead. Karim Benzema had to be taken off just after half time due to an injury. It got much worse for the Merengues as Elche scored a second through Pere Milla with 14 minutes of regular time left in the game. Milla then handled the ball in his own box giving Luka Modric the chance to pull a goal back which the Croatian took. Vinicius Jr set up Eder Militao who scored the equalizer in the 2nd minute of injury time. Real Madrid did manage to come back from 2 goals down to rescue a point but it was a disappointing night for them. They are in a pickle as their next game is the  Copa del Rey Quarter final against Atletico Madrid where they could be without Vinicius Jr, Eder Militao, Casemiro, Rodrygo and Fede Valverde who have to report to international duty while Karim Benzema is a doubt after his injury.

Barcelona got a narrow 1-0 win away at Deportivo Alaves. In a game where Barcelona had 76 percent possession they needed a 87th minute goal from Frenkie De Jong to break the deadlock. Barcelona had 4 shots on target compared to Elche's 2. The victory means that they are now just 1 point behind 4th placed Atletico Madrid who is their next opponent in La Liga. Xavi will be fairly pleased with the 3 points but Barcelona are nowhere near the level they need to be if they wish to finish in the top 4.
