(Football news) Atletico Madrid extended their unbeaten run in La Liga to 9 games as they won 1-0 away at Girona. Diego Simeone started the team in a 3-5-2 formation with Memphis Depay and Antoine Griezmann up top. Yannick Carrasco and Nahuel Molina were wingbacks with Koke, Thomas Lemar and Marcos Llorente. Jan Oblak started in goal with Mario Hermosa, Jose Gimenez and Stefan Savic in defence. Alvaro Morata was once again benched along with Rodrigo De Paul, Angel Correa, Saul Niguez and Axel Witsel.
In the 8th minute, Stefan Savic blocked Valentin Castellanos’ shot with his hand. However the penalty was not given as the striker was clearly offside. Atletico Madrid responded well as they had a few good chances but the Rojiblancos couldn’t test Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga properly. Atletico Madrid were relentless with their attack as they created a lot of chances. In total the Rojiblancos had 14 shots but only 4 of them were on target. Girona also had a couple of very good chances but Jan Oblak was comfortable in front of goal.
The first big chance of the game came in the 69th minute when centre back David Lopez shot from almost the halfway line. Jan Oblak was off his line but managed to tip the ball over just in time. Alvaro Morata scored the winner in injury time from a scrappy corner. It was initially ruled out for offside but VAR overturned it. Morata has now scored 3 goals as a substitute in the last 2 games. He is likely to regain his spot in the starting line-up next week. Atletico Madrid are now looking comfortable in 3rd spot. Their next game is against Valencia at the Wanda Metropolitano.
