Atletico Madrid look to cut the gap with Real Madrid down to 2 points

Atletico Madrid look to bounce back after the loss against Barcelona as they host Mallorca

(Football news) Atletico Madrid’s eleven game unbeaten run came to an end on the weekend as they narrowly lost 1-0 to Barcelona at the Camp Nou. Now they host Mallorca at the Wanda Metropolitano where a win could get them within two points of second placed Real Madrid as Los Blancos lost 4-2 against Girona. The first half of Atletico Madrid’s season was dreadfull as they finished bottom of their Champions League group and weren’t up to speed in La Liga.

However Diego Simeone has managed to turn things around and now if they manage to finish second above Real Madrid which is quite possible than it will be a very good achievement. That can obviously be used to build something better next season with a few signings.

Memphis Depay and Reinildo are still unavailable for Atlético Madrid due to their injuries. Stefan Savic is suspended while Marcos Llorente and Geoffrey Kondogbia are both back from suspension. Atletico Madrid’s form has a lot to do with Antoine Griezmann playing to the best of his ability once again. The defence is looking solid once again which is great news for Diego Simeone whose position was being questioned earlier this season.

As for Mallorca, Inigo Ruiz de Galarreta and Antonio Raillo are both suspended after picking up a booking on the weekend in their win against Getafe. Ludwig Augustinsson, Matija Nastasic and Giovanni Gonzalez are all out with injuries.

Mallorca have won their last 2 games and they could go as high as 9th on the La Liga table with a win. Atletico Madrid haven’t dropped points in a home game since January 9th against Barcelona. Mallorca will have to find a way to stop Griezmann from dictating play which is a very difficult task. Vedat Muriqi is the obvious goal threat but the visitors will have to play out of their skins to create enough chances for their striker.
