(Football news) Prolific Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku has returned to Stamford Bridge for a reported club record fee of 97 million pounds ($135 million), seven years after he left Chelsea for Everton. Lukaku has impressed the Chelsea F.C staff with his performances in the Serie A as he helped Inter Milan secure their first Scudetto in 11 years. However, the Italian giants were forced to sell their prized asset due to financial difficulties due to COVID-19.
The 28 year old has enjoyed a successful stint in Milan, scoring 64 goals in two seasons and has also scored 113 goals in the Premier League for Everton, West Brom and Manchester United. Despite having won the coveted champions league, Chelsea were keen to bolster their attack by signing the Belgian after finishing in fourth place in the Premier League with Jorginho as the top scorer with 7 goals. Having signed Timo Werner from RB Leipzig for £47.5m, the German failed to impress after scoring only six goals in 35 appearances. Veteran French forward Olivier Giroud has been moved to AC Milan which meant a spot was vacant for Lukaku to make his own in Thomas Tuchel’s side.
The contract sees Lukaku sign a five year deal with the champions of Europe until 2026 and is expected to help Chelsea pose a serious title threat when the new season begins this weekend.
