Indian archers hope to make a mark at the Tokyo Olympics

(Olympics news) While the Indian Olympic contingent will be participating in the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony, archers such as Deepika Kumari, Atanu Das, Pravin Jadhav, and Tarundeep Rai will begin their quest for an Olympic medal with the qualification rounds set to begin on Friday (23rd July).

The mixed events are a brand new event at this year’s Tokyo Olympics and the Indian archers will be competing in five categories: men’s and women’s individual events, men’s and women’s team events, and a mixed event.

Here are the four archers that will be representing India at the Tokyo Olympics.

Atanu Das

Representing India at the men’s recurve individual event, men’s recurve team and if qualification is achieved, the recurve mixed team, the 29 year old has won seven world cup medals, including two golds at the 2021 World Cup. He is expected to team up with his wife Deepika Kumari at the mixed event and will hope to replicate their impressive display from the Paris World Cup.

Pravin Jadhav

The 25 year old archer is the youngest amongst the Indian contingent. He will be competing in the men’s recurve individual and men’s recurve team.

Tarundeep Rai

As India’s oldest and most experienced Archer, Tarundeep Rai is expected to play an integral role in the success of India’s archery contingent. The Tokyo Olympics will be his third overall, and the 37 year old will be representing India in men’s recurve individual, men’s recurve team and men’s recurve mixed team (subject to qualification).

Deepika Kumari

Reigning world number 1 Deepika Kumari is one of the likeliest medal prospects in the Tokyo Olympics. Despite featuring in her second Olympics so far (first was London 2012), she has not been able to win a medal at the Olympic podium. However, Deepika is in fine form, winning a hat-trick of gold medals at the Archery World cup stage 3 in Paris and will feature in two events, women’s recurve individual and recurve mixed team events.

Let’s explore the format of the individual event qualification rounds.

1) A total number of 64 men and women will shoot 72 arrows and will be ranked from first to 64th based on their total scores.

2) They will then compete in pairs: 1st vs 64th, 2nd vs 63rd and so on.

3) The participant that loses the individual elimination will leave the competition until only two athletes remain who will fight for gold.

4) The two semi-finalists will compete for the bronze medal.

2) Each team consisting of three archers will shoot three arrows; the team with the higher score wins 2 points.

3) The winner of the match will be the team that scores 5 points first. If there is a tie, each archer will shoot one more shot.

Archery Mixed Event format.

1) The inaugural Archery Mixed Event will be held at the Tokyo Olympics. Both men and women will be competing in the same team, with a total of 128 archers (64 men and 64 women) will participate.

2) Each set will consist of four arrows and the first team to achieve five points wins the match.

3) The target will be placed 70 meters away from the archers.

4) If there is a tie, each nation will shoot a single arrow with the team scoring the highest being declared the winner.
