In a move that has sent waves of nostalgia and admiration across the sports world, Alex Morgan, the celebrated U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team forward, has announced her retirement from professional soccer expecting her second child. Morgan’s departure marks the end of an era for American soccer and a chapter in women’s sports that will be remembered for its excellence and impact.
Morgan, 35, has been a towering figure in soccer since she burst onto the international scene as a teenager. Her career is highlighted by stellar achievements, including winning two FIFA Women’s World Cups (2015 and 2019) and earning an Olympic gold medal in 2012. Known for her blistering speed, clinical finishing, and magnetic presence on the field, Morgan has been a pivotal player for both her club and country.
“This decision wasn’t easy, but at the beginning of 2024 I felt in my heart and soul that this was the last season that I would play soccer,” she said. “Soccer has been a part of me for 30 years, and it was one of the first things that I ever loved. I gave everything to this sport and what I got in return was more than I could have ever dreamed of” said Morgan.
Morgan will play her final match with her club team, the San Diego Wave of the National Women’s Soccer League, on Sunday at Snapdragon Stadium. Early in her career, she was known by the nickname Baby Horse, a moniker given to her by teammates because of her long strides. One of her most memorable goals came in London, the game-winner in extra time against Canada that put the United States into the Olympic final. A year earlier, she scored in the World Cup final against Japan. Morgan played in 224 matches for the national team, ninth-all time, with 123 goals (fifth all-time) and 53 assists (ninth all-time). She was named the U.S. Soccer Player of the Year in 2012 and 2018.
The future of soccer will undoubtedly miss Morgan’s brilliance, but her influence will continue to resonate. As she embarks on this new chapter, likely focusing on her family and other ventures, soccer fans everywhere will remember her not only for her extraordinary talent but also for her character and the indelible mark she has left on the sport.
Alex Morgan’s retirement is a poignant moment in soccer history, marking the end of one of the most decorated careers in the sport. As we bid farewell to one of soccer’s greatest icons, we celebrate her unparalleled contributions and look forward to the enduring impact of her legacy.
