(Boxing news) Abdul Fawaz of the ‘Fair Chance Team’ has got off to a winning start at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in the team’s first appearance of the tournament. The ‘Fair Chance Team’ was created to bring attention to the humanitarian crisis and the growing displacement by launching the AIBA social development program so that every boxer has a fair chance and fight.
The aim of the project is to support talented boxers who are not able to represent their native countries due to a humanitarian crisis, they get the opportunity to compete under the AIBA flag at the Men’s World Championship in Belgrade. The same project will also be implemented for the Women’s World Championships in Istanbul and other tournaments going forward.
Afghanistan-born boxer Tawfiqullah, one of the members of Fair Chance Team, said “A few members of my family are boxers and because of their examples I also started to train. My brother took me to a boxing gym seven years ago when I was 15 years old. My dream is to win the Boxing World Championships. My favorite time is when I stay in the ring and fight. To represent the Fair Chance Team here in Belgrade is a unique chance for me. Together with others from my team we went through many difficulties to come here and I am very thankful to AIBA for such a great opportunity.”
Abdul Fawaz, 19 won his first bout at the World Championships after winning his first silver medal in the Scottish National Championships in 2018. Also known as ‘Floyd’, he was first born in Nigeria but trains at the Byron Amateur Boxing Club in Scotland. He only had 20 contests under his belt prior to competing at the Men’s World Boxing Championships and did well against Trinidad & Tobago’s Anthony Joseph, displaying excellent work rate and won the contest by split decision for the Fair Chance Team.
