Afghanistan goes unbeaten in ODI series against Netherlands

(Cricket news) It was 3-0 for Afghanistan as the team beat Netherlands by 75 runs in the final match of the series at Qatar. Afghanistan had won the toss and chose to bat first as they put up the highest score of the series.

After winning the series by winning the second match, Hashmatullah Shahidi and co made sure the team ended the series with a whitewash. Shahidi completed his first assignment as the team did well, especially the bowlers who were in form in all the matches. All of the batters did spend some time on the crease in the final match as the top order up 190 runs and in the last 6 overs the runs were still pouring in thanks to Najibullah Zadran hitting his 12th half century.

Afghanistan had Riaz Hussan making debut for the team and helped the team in the initial stages with a half century. The teenager opened with Rahmanullah Gurbaz who had scored a century in the 2nd game, Hussan put on a sturdy partnership with Rahmat Shah that gave the team 86 runs. 25 year old Clayton Floyd was the star performer among the bowlers for the Netherlands as he bowled 8 overs while giving away 17 runs and took the wicket of Gurbaz.

Afghanistan put up their second highest score against Netherlands as a target of 255 was set for the team. The last time Netherlands scored above 250 was in 2019 against Zimbabwe and have only scored above 250 once against Afghanistan which happened 10 years ago.

Netherlands got just what it had wanted in the series, a 100 run partnership by the openers as Scott Edwards scored his third consecutive half century. Colin Ackermann got to his maiden half century then went on to register his highest score of 81, both the openers were dismissed in similar fashion by spinners. Qais Ahmad made his ODI debut for Afghanistan, the spinner got the wicket of Edward in the 23rd over and went on to pick up two more. Netherlands lost their last 8 wickets for 73 runs as the team returned without a win at Qatar.

Edwards finished as the leading run scorer of the series with 50 plus scores in all the three matches. Mujeeb Ur Rahman finished as the leading wicket taker with 7 wickets and was the only to get 4 wickets in a match.

Afghanistan: 254/5 in 50 overs

Netherlands: 179/10 in 42.4 overs

Player of the match: Najibullah Zadran, 71 from 59 balls (6×3, 4×8)

Player of the series: Scott Edwards (208 runs in 3 matches)
