(Football news) Liverpool defeated Watford 2-0 with Diogo Jota and Fabinho on the scoresheet. Ever since his debut for the Reds, nobody has scored more goals than Jota who scored his seventh header for Liverpool. Joe Gomez provided the perfect measured cross and the Portuguese forward headed it past Ben Foster. Fabinho then doubled the advantage by scoring from the penalty spot, helping his team keep pace with City at the top of the table.
Meanwhile at Turf Moor, reigning champions Manchester City comfortably defeated Burnley 2-0. Kevin De Bruyne gave his side the lead just five minutes from kick off when he latched onto a cushioned pass by Raheem Sterling and blasted a first time shot into the back of the net. Ilkay Gundogan doubled the advantage in the 25th minute with Sterling providing the assist yet again. The result meant that City retained their one point advantage over Liverpool after 30 matches played.
In what can be considered as their best performance of the season, Burnley thrashed Chelsea 4-1 at Stamford Bridge and secured their first North London derby victory in 83 years. Few would have predicted this scoreline when Antonio Rudiger scored a 40 yard screamer in the 48th minute but Vitaly Janelt managed an equaliser just two minutes later. To make matters worse for the hosts, Burnley scored their second when Bryan Mbeumo combined with Christian Eriksen and the Danish midfielder found the back of the net.
At the hour mark, Janelt found the net once again after a brilliant pass from Ivan Toney while substitute Yoane Wissa capitalised on a poor clearance by Rudiger to score the fourth. The result is a massive accomplishment for Burnley, not only because of the quality of their opponents but Burnley are now 11 points clear of the relegation zone and fans will remember this victory for years to come.
Manchester United’s hopes of securing qualification for the Champions League next season were dealt with a major blow as they drew 1-1 against Leicester City at Old Trafford. The Foxes took the lead in the 63rd minute through Kelechi Iheanacho but Fred scored the equaliser just three minutes later. It could have been worse for the hosts as James Maddison was denied a late winner after a VAR review found Iheanacho guilty of a foul on Varane during the build up leading up to the goal. The result means Manchester United are seventh in the Premier League, level on points with West Ham who have played a game more.
