Auckland Aces allrounder Simon Keene sizzles with first five-wicket bag

Canterbury has avoided posting their lowest List A one-day total after fighting back from a perilous 59/7 to reach 109 in 30 dramatic overs at Bay Oval this afternoon, in the top-of-the-table Ford Trophy clash in Mt Maunganui.

The sharp pace combination of Auckland Aces Lockie Ferguson (3/33) and Simon Keene (5/29, his maiden List A bag) proved too hot to handle for the current leaders.

Canterbury’s line-up crumbled after having been sent in – Chad Bowes, Rhys Mariu, Mitch Hay, and Michael Rippon all dismissed for no score in a top and middle order rout, and tailender Sean Davey also departing for no score later in the innings, while Keene bagged one of his team’s top four all-time bowling returns in Aces matches against this team.

Canterbury’s lowest ever one day team total stands at 75 and dates all the way back to the 1973/74 season at Christchurch’s old Lancaster Park.

Zak Foulkes, who top-scored with 27 after lasting for an hour at the crease, made sure his team avoided that ignominy in the 19th over, but it was the Aces holding the cards at lunch.

Meanwhile in Dunedin, 21-year-old Central Stags opener Curtis Heaphy has powered to his maiden List A one-day century, blasting past his previous career best of 70 to reach 142 off 145 balls in the Stags’ strong total of 330/7.

Heaphy had solid support from fellow opener Brad Schmulian (78) in a century opening stand, followed by Jack Boyle with 53.

In Hamilton, the Wellington Firebirds have set hosts Northern Districts a chase of 249 at Seddon Park.

Young Mo Abbas top-scored for the visitors with a career-best 78, veterans Brett Hampton and Neil Wagner both returning 3/49 for ND as they did the damage through the top and middle order.
