Mushtaq Ahmed appointed as Bangladesh spin bowling coach

(Cricket News) Pakistan’s World Cup winning leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed has been appointed as the spin bowling coach of the Bangladesh Men’s national side. Mushtaq has taken over from the legendary Sri Lankan spinner Rangana Herath in the position.

Herath worked with the Bangladeshi side as a spin bowling consultant for the past few years. He joined the side in July 2021 and was appointed as a full-time coach in November 2021. He parted ways with the BCB last year and has now been replaced by Mushtaq, who will work with the side  until the end of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA.

The former spinner is expected to join the Bangladesh side later this month ahead of the preparation camp for the Zimbabwe T20s. Bangladesh is scheduled to play a 5-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, starting from the 3rd of May.

“It is a great honour for me to be a part of the Bangladesh cricket team as a spin bowling coach. I am looking forward to the role and want to pass my experience to the players because they are very coachable and I always believe that they are one of the most dangerous teams around,” Mushtaq was quoted in a BCB press release.

“They can beat anyone because they have the capability, the resources and the talent. I will try to instil that belief into them. I am very excited at the opportunity to work with the team,” he concluded.

Mushtaq has had experiences as a spin bowling coach with various teams which incudes England (2008-2014), West Indies (2018-19) and Pakistan (2020-22). He has also played a role  of the Pakistan team’s bowling consultant from the 2014 to 2016. In his playing days, he was one of Pakistan’s premier spinner. He took 185 Test wickets and 161 ODI wickets in his international career.
