(Football news) This past week was a big one in the Spanish football calendar, with the Super Cup taking place and with the second half of the LALIGA EA SPORTS season starting too. Each of the main headlines from the past seven days is outlined below.

Real Madrid win the Spanish Super Cup

For the 13th time in club history, Real Madrid have won the Spanish Super Cup. Los Blancos did so by defeating Atlético de Madrid 5-3 after extra time in the semi-final and by thrashing FC Barcelona 4-1 in the final. This is the 11th trophy Carlo Ancelotti has won at the club, with only Miguel Muñoz, with 14, having won more.

Vinícius is Real Madrid’s hat-trick hero

The hero for Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final was Vinícius, as the Brazilian scored his team’s first three goals of the match against Barça. This was his second hat-trick for the club, as he stepped up on the big occasion.

Girona FC move one point clear at the top

There was LALIGA EA SPORTS action over the weekend too and Girona FC had the chance to move ahead of Real Madrid at the top of the standings. The Catalan outfit visited UD Almería and were held to a 0-0 draw. Despite failing to win, Girona FC are the new leaders of the competition as they’ve gone one point clear of Real Madrid, who have a game in hand.

Berenguer fires Athletic Club to Basque Derby victory

The second Basque Derby of the LALIGA took place at San Mamés in Bilbao on Saturday, and Álex Berenguer was the MVP as he scored twice in the first half to lead Athletic Club to a 2-1 victory over their rivals Real Sociedad.

UD Las Palmas celebrate their biggest win of the season

Newly promoted UD Las Palmas have been impressive since returning to LALIGA EA SPORTS, and they won their eighth game of the campaign by overcoming Villarreal CF 3-0 on Saturday. This was the biggest win of the season so far for Los Amarillos.

Granada CF continue to strengthen

The busiest club so far in the January transfer market has been Granada CF. The Andalusian club have now signed five new players, with midfielder Martin Hongla the latest to arrive at the Nuevo Estadio de Los Cármenes.

Ilaix Moriba is back in LALIGA EA SPORTS

Getafe CF have signed Ilaix Moriba on loan from RB Leipzig, with the former FC Barcelona and Valencia CF midfielder returning to LALIGA EA SPORTS. The 20-year-old has already made 52 appearances in the competition, and will add to that tally at the Coliseum.

Lucien Agoumé arrives at Sevilla FC

Sevilla FC are also looking to strengthen through the January transfer market and they have signed midfielder Lucien Agoumé from Inter. The 21-year-old midfielder is highly rated and has played for France at U21 level.

Iván Villar pens a new deal in Vigo

RC Celta announced the contract extension of Iván Villar this past week. The 26-year-old goalkeeper, whose contract was set to expire this summer, has put pen to paper on a new deal that’ll run until 2027.

The Copa del Rey reaches the Round of 16

The Round of 16 draw for the 2023/24 Copa del Rey was made this past week, and the eight fixtures will be played across January 16th, 17th and 18th. There are several interesting ties, including a derby between Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid on the Thursday night.
