Women’s T20 World Cup set to be moved from Bangladesh

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is likely to be moved out of Bangladesh. Bangladesh is undergoing a crisis at this point in time and the entire nation was under curfew some days ago. The Prime Minister of Bangladesh fled the country earlier this month and there has been a change in the government.

The recent International Cricket Council (ICC) Board meeting, which took place virtually on Tuesday indicated that the global event is most likely to be relocated to the UAE. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 3, while the final will be played on October 20.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), is thought to have agreed to the change. The Board members/ Directors were overwhelmingly of the opinion that the world event could not be played in Bangladesh under the current conditions. Despite this, the BCB will still serve as the official host of the event.

There were speculations that the World Cup might be shifted to India, however, Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary categorically denied any chances of the same. “They (ICC) have asked us if we would conduct the World Cup. I have categorically said no. We’re in the monsoon and on top of that we will host the women’s ODI World Cup next year. I don’t want to give any kind of signals that I want to hold consecutive World Cups,” Shah said.

With just more than a month to the global event, one can expect that the final decision might have already been taken by the office bearers, and it shall be soon announced in the public interest. UAE will fit in as an ideal venue, given the similarity in conditions and also not much difference in the time zone.
