Women’s Champions League: Chelsea women salvage draw against VFL Wolfsburg in opening Group A fixture

(Football news) Former Wolfsburg striker Pernille Harder snatched a stoppage time equalizer for Chelsea who began their Champions League campaign with a draw after a series of defensive errors against the German side. The runners up of last year's Champions League campaign looked to begin this year on a strong note, especially after the 4-0 humbling by Barcelona in the final.

However, Emma Hayes’ side looked like their own worst enemies despite getting the first goal through Sam Kerr. Indecisive errors gifted goals to Tabea Wassmuth and Jill Roord and to make matters worse, another error led to Wassmuth getting her second goal of the night shortly after the first half.

A volley by Bethany England gave Chelsea a glimmer of hope with 39 minutes to go and the 27 year old was soon replaced by Fran Kirby. With pressure mounting on VFL Wolfsburg especially in the final ten minutes, Pernille Harder made the best of an error in the penalty area to salvage a draw for the Blues. With this result Chelsea are second in Group A, two points behind Juventus.

They will now face Leicester City in the Women’s Super League on Sunday before a clash against Juventus in the Women’s Champions League.
