(Football news) Having resoundingly defeated Servette 7-0 last week, the Blues welcomed the Swiss side at the Kingsmeadow Stadium hoping to continue their fine run of form, winning their last six matches in all competitions and remain unbeaten in 11 games with their last defeat coming against Arsenal on September 5th.
However, the home fans were in for a bit of a let-down as this fixture proved far from the goal fest like last week with Servette displaying a resolute performance despite Chelsea dominating the proceedings for the majority of the match. Emma Hayes’ side failed to sufficiently test Servette goalkeeper Ines Pereira with Sam Kerr failing to capitalize on the few opportunities they did get.
The hosts did think they went ahead 11 minutes before the end of the first half when Millie Bright's header was saved off the line by Monica Soraia Amaral Mendes. However, Chelsea looked like a much more dangerous side in the second half as they played quicker and created more opportunities with Millie Bright’s header threatening to open the scoring yet again.
The Blues finally found their breakthrough in the 67th minute when Fran Kirby passed the ball to Sam Kerr whose powerful shot hit the back of the net from a tight angle. To make matters worse for Servette, Soulard was given a second yellow card after her tackle on Niamh Charles in the 82nd minute as the visitors were reduced to 10 men. Emma Hayes also gave former Arsenal and Manchester United player Lauren James her debut as her brother and Chelsea right-back Reece James looked on from the stands.
Having secured three points, Chelsea are currently on 10 points after playing 4 games in the Women’s Champions League, three points ahead of second place Juventus. The Blues will host Birmingham in the Women’s Super League on Saturday, hoping for a positive result to put pressure on league leaders Arsenal.
