(Football news) Wolverhampton Wanderers have held talks with Atletico Madrid over a double deal to sign both Matheus Cunha and Felipe. New manager Julen Lopetegui arrived at Molineux in November after the departure of Bruno Lage and is now exploring new ways to bolster his squad to aid their fight against a surprise relegation race. Wolves are currently bottom of the Premier League and four points from safety.
Lopetegui has identified both Cunha and Felipe as possible targets and Wolves have reportedly held talks with Atletico over both players moving to England in the January transfer window. The pair have been told by Simone that they are free to leave Atletico after a turbulent first half of the La Liga season. Diego Simeone’s side have fallen well behind in the title race and have left them battling for a spot in next year’s Champions League. The 23-year-old Brazilian – Cunha, has failed to score in 17 appearances for Atletico this season but has still managed to attract significant interest from across Europe as agent Jorge Mendes is working to move Wolves to the front of the queue for his signature.
According to reports , Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Everton all expressed an interest in Cunha but Wolves jumped in front of the queue as the transfer is expected to be an initial loan deal with a view to a permanent move. Cunha is said to be very keen to work with Lopetegui and is understood to follow his teammate Felipe to Molineux. The 33-year-old defender is also out of contract at the end of the season and he is expected to be granted a permanent departure from the Wanda Metropolitano this winter transfer window. Wolves have still now just enquired about a number of signings from Atletico, with Mendes acting as the catalyst but it looks like both Cunha and Felipe are close to joining Wolves.
