Wolves agree €18m fee for Sasa Kalajdzic from Stuttgart

(Football news) Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly agreed a fee of €18million (£15.4m) for Stuttgart striker Sasa Kalajdzic. Wolves were in talks to sign the 25-year-old as he is set to sign a five-year deal with the option for a further year with Bruno Lage’s season having started without a recognised striker in their ranks after Fabio Silva joined Anderlecht on loan and Raul Jimenez sustained an injury ahead of the season. However, he returned this weekend for the 1-1 draw against Newcastle United.

Kalajdzic joined the German side VFB Stuttgart from Austrian side Admira Wacker in 2019 and has since then made 60 appearances for the club, scoring 24 goals. The Austrian international enjoyed a very successful 2020-21 season where he netted 16 goals in 33 Bundesliga matches, but injuries restricted him to just 15 top flight league appearances last season. Kalajdzic has started all three of Stuttgarts Bundesliga matches so far this season, where he has contributed three assists. Wolves this summer transfer window have so far signed Goncalo Guedes, Matheus Nunes and Nathan Collins. Bruno Lage’s side will hope that these new signings can help them snap out of their winless run in their four Premier League matches.

Wolves will be playing against AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League, who also have their own problems as Scott Parker got sacked after their 9-0 thrashing to Liverpool on Wednesday. It remains to be seen if Kalajdzic’s transfer will be through in time for him to be eligible for that game, or if they will have to wait a while longer He stands at a towering 6ft 6in and most likely be the long-term successor of Raul Jimenez, with the departure of Fabio Silva it meant that Wolves had no natural back-up striker. The 25-year-old was linked with Manchester United earlier in the window but United didn’t opt to move for him.

Former interim United boss Ralf Rangnick, who is now the Austrian national team coach, warned him against moving to Old Trafford as he believed the forward would benefit from the stability of another season in the Bundesliga. However, Kalajdzic clearly seems to believe his interests ahead of the World Cup would be better served by securing a transfer to the Premier League with Wolves. The £15m Wolves will splash on the striker will see the club spending go up to approximately £120m. In terms of outgoings, Wolves have only seen Morgan Gibbs-White depart to Nottingham Forest in a deal which could eventually rise to just shy of £45m, while captain Conor Coady left on loan to Everton.
