(Football news) Arsenal were knocked out of the quarter-finals of the Women’s Champions League after Wolfsburg secured a 2-0 win at the Volkswagen Arena. The first leg was evenly poised at 1-1 at the Emirates Stadium but in the second leg, the hosts scored at either side of half-time with goals from former Gunner Jill Roord who found the back of the net in the ninth minute and an own goal by Leah Williamson ended Arsenal’s hopes of a win.
Having endured an onslaught from Wolfsburg in the first half, Arsenal displayed a much improved performance after the break but couldn’t create many clear cut chances. However, midway through the second half, Jonsdottir got her second assist of the evening by forcing an own goal from Williamson. The forward flashed an awkward delivery in front of goal and Williamson’s attempt to block went beyond Zinsberger and into her own net.
It’s fair to say that Arsenal didn’t deserve to go through as Wolfsburg were the better side in the clash. The Gunners had a few moments where they looked threatening as Vivianne Miedema header crashed off the upright and Williamson’s follow-up effort went onto the post. The result means that Wolfsburg will now face Barcelona in the Women’s Champions League semi-final.
Meanwhile, seven time European champions Lyon defeated Juventus 3-1 to win 4-3 on aggregate to set up a semi finals clash against Paris-Saint Germain. Goals from Ada Hegerberg and Melvine Malard cancelled out Juventus’ 2-1 first leg advantage and Catarina Macario scored the hosts’ third goal to establish a two goal lead with 17 minutes remaining. Juventus scored a late consolation goal through Andrea Staskova but it wasn’t enough to salvage the situation.
