Virat Kohli Sets New Record by Surpassing Kumar Sangakkara

(Cricket News) At the Supersport Park in Centurion, Virat Kohli is playing for India in the Boxing Day Test against South Africa. He looked in good form in the first innings before Kagiso Rabada delivered a peach to send back, but again in the second innings, Kohli has been in sublime touch. Virat Kohli and records go hand in hand, and the way he has batted in 2023, the year is capping off on a perfect note for him.

Kohli may have reached the 2000-run mark in international cricket this year during his knock in the middle of the third day of the Test match. In total, this is the seventh time in a calendar year that he has crossed the 2000-run mark at the highest level. He is the first player to do so, surpassing Kumar Sangakkara, who had accomplished this feat six times in his illustrious career.

Virat Kohli has surpassed New Zealand’s Darly Mitchell in the list of players with the most runs in 2023 in international cricket; only Shubman Gill, with 2154 runs, is ahead of him. The number four batsman in Tests for India has averaged a majestic 67 this year, with eight centuries and nine fifties to his credit.

After going through a drought in terms of centuries and form since 2020, Kohli has undoubtedly made a comeback in 2023 with his outstanding batting. Sadly, India was defeated in the World Cup final by Australia on November 19, but Kohli’s outstanding year at the highest level has undoubtedly been his most recent.

Returning to Virat Kohli’s record of 2000+ international runs in seven separate calendar years, Mahela Jayawardene has achieved this five times, placing him third on the list, and Sachin Tendulkar has also accomplished this five times in his illustrious career.
