Verstappen: Red Bull still has to work on its kerbs and street circuits

Red Bull's technical director, Pierre Wache, and world champion Max Verstappen have identified low-speed bends needs to improve by 2024.

(Motorsports news) The RB19’s lone loss of the 2023 season occurred at a track where those two factors, along with Red Bull’s errors in attempting to modify its ride height settings during routine event setup, helped Ferrari win in Singapore with a win by Carlos Sainz. In an exclusive interview with Motorsport.com, Verstappen discussed the “not ideal” effects of Red Bull’s reduced development time for the most of 2023 due to its fine for exceeding the 2021 cost limitation. He noted that for his team, “it helps if we know what direction we are working in.”

Verstappen responded, “Mostly, I think just street circuits and low-speed, kerbing,” when asked where Red Bull is therefore focusing its efforts on refining and developing the RB19, statistically the most dominant car in Formula One history. “I don’t think we are the best right now, these kinds of things.” After that, Wache was questioned at the 2023 season finale in Abu Dhabi, and the Frenchman affirmed Verstappen’s evaluation. However, he cautioned Red Bull of sacrificing the best aspects of the RB19 in an attempt to improve the few areas where the team believed it had fallen short this season.

Since Verstappen is a driver, the team may view that same problem from a different angle, but Wache noted, “It’s pretty well summarised where we have to work for next year.” Slow motion is undoubtedly one area. We are not the greatest at 90-degree turns, as demonstrated by the qualifier in Baku and another track type there. Singapore was not a great one either. Furthermore, we need to make improvements in this area because we are not yet proficient at riding kerbs and uneven surfaces.

You never get anything for free in our system or in this business. “You can increase something’s potential overall, but most of the time it also affects another part of the vehicle. Therefore, we must exercise extreme caution so as not to undermine the strengths that we have established. “It is our goal to strengthen our areas of weakness while maintaining as much of our strengths as possible.”
