A22 Sports, a Madrid-based organization, comes back with the renamed “Unify League,” a 96-team competition divided into four divisions. The initial intentions for a breakaway league fell through in 2021 due to loud fan protests.
La Liga powerhouses Real Madrid and Barcelona back A22, which will attempt to win over supporters by offering a free-to-air streaming service with advertisements. According to GIVEMESPORT, A22 has written to UEFA to request formal support for the new league, which, if approved without any problems by European football’s governing body, could start in the 2026–2027 season.
The Unify League would consist of ninety-six clubs split among four leagues. There would be 16 clubs in each of the top two leagues, “Star” and “Gold,” divided into groups of eight. Both the ‘Blue’ and ‘Union’ leagues would have 32 clubs each, arranged in eight-club groups.
“The format is quite straightforward and completely meritocratic. And we believe that asking UEFA for official recognition is the best course of action. Additionally, it’s how we express our desire to avoid conflict. “We want to adopt a more peaceful approach, as evidenced by the league’s name,” A22 told GIVEMESPORT.
Javier Tebas, the president of La Liga, has expressed his displeasure of the plan, but A22 is still keen to proceed and is waiting for permission to start their so-called revolutionary football league.
