Julian Marquez defeated Maki Pitolo via submission (anaconda choke) – R3, 4:17 February 14th 2021 – The UFC returned to their hometown in Las Vegas with a great card scheduled to take place at the APEX. In the main event we had the ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’, the reigning UFC Welterweight Champion, Kamaru Usman return to the octagon after a seven month break to defend his title against Gilbert Burns. The fight between the two was originally scheduled for UFC 251 in July last year but was cancelled after Burns and his coach Greg Jones tested positive for Coronavirus. Second time around this fight was scheduled for UFC 256, but the bout was delayed again due to Usman recovering from injuries. The replacement co-main event featured Maycee ‘The Future’ Barber 98-10 vs Alexa Grasso (12-3). Alexa Grasso won the fight by unanimous decision, giving Maycee Barber her second straight defeat. After going undefeated in her first eight bouts, Barber (8-2) has now dropped two in a row and while Grasso (13-3) who is known for her striking made the difference in this bout with her grappling. Grasso’s victory should propel her to a top ten spot in the women’s flyweight division rankings. Anthony Hernandez, Julian Marquez, Kamaru Usman and Polyana Viana put forth POTN efforts to round out an eventful evening. There was an exciting Middleweight matchup between Kelvin Gastelum, the former interim UFC Middleweight Champion and Ian ‘The Hurricane’ Heinisch. Gastelum turned around his three fight losing streak after being defeated by Hermansson, Till and Adesanya. While Heinisch was coming off an impressive win against Gerald Meerschaert last June, 2020. The dominating performance by welterweight champion Kamaru Usman stole the show at the UFC 258. Leon Edwards appears to be Usman’s next opponent, while it’s also realistic to consider Jorge Masvidal as a potential contender. However, considering Usman’s performance against Burns it appears that ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ has no peers in the welterweight division.
