(Football news) Spurs suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Brighton last time out, but the Cherries extended their incredible rise up the Premier League table on Boxing Day with their sixth win in seven games. Tottenham’s Thursday night excursion to the South Coast looked doomed from the start, as they found themselves two goals behind just thirty minutes at Brighton’s Amex Stadium.

The hosts scored twice more after the North London team failed to muster a shot on goal in the first half. Pervis Estupinan scored a long-range goal, and Joao Pedro scored twice more from the penalty spot, beating Guglielmo Vicario.

Alejo Veliz and Ben Davies scored two goals each in the last ten minutes to give Spurs a chance, but they missed numerous more late opportunities and an unlikely comeback was eventually impossible.

As a result, West Ham United, a rival team based in the capital city, has pulled to within three points of the reigning champions Manchester City, who are currently in fourth place in the Premier League rankings, with Ange Postecoglou’s team sitting just below them.

Now, Tottenham will play their first New Year’s Eve match since 2011 when they return home for the year’s last match. Postecoglou will want to break the streak against Bournemouth, as they have lost their last league game in each of the last five calendar years.

An entirely new Bournemouth team will visit Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this time around, despite the fact that Spurs have scored 32 goals in their 13 prior Premier League encounters with the Cherries, averaging 2.5 goals per game.

Having lost four of their previous five year-ending games, Bournemouth, like their hosts, has struggled mightily against formidable opponents. They may, however, go to London with confidence that they will break that record, according to recent outcomes.
