Paris Masters: Murray loses to wildcard Simon while Norrie wins

(Tennis news) Andy Murray was shocked by wildcard entry Gilles Simon, who rallied from 5-3 down to win 4-6 7-5 6-3 against the 35 year old. Murray, who broke Simon’s serve in the second game, found himself 40-0 down in game three but managed to save three break points to extend his advantage. Simon however cut the deficit, holding Murray to love to make it 4-2 but the Scot fought back and didn’t allow his opponent to post any points in game seven. With the score 5-3, Murray double faulted for the third time in the opening game as Simon took full advantage and got his first break for the match.

Simon dealt with the first set point with a smash and attempted the same shot for the second but it went beyond the line, giving Murray the set and another break. At 1-1 during the second set, a visibly frustrated Murray hit his racquet on the ground when his forehand hit the net. Simon capitalised on the mistake by breaking Murray’s serve but Murray managed to break back immediately to level the set before pulling ahead. What followed was a 24 shot rally, first with an over the shoulder shot followed by a forehand flick from the baseline but Simon went on to level things at three games apiece.

Murray won the next and earned a vital point to make it 5-3 before Simon retaliated by breaking back. The Frenchman then used his momentum to make it 5-5 and went on to get 10 points to break Murray for a fourth game and clinched the set, much to the delight of the home fans. Simon then went on to make it 2-1 by getting the first break of the final set and the Frenchman went on to secure the victory for only the third time in 19 encounters with Murray.
