Nikoloz Basilashvili and Taylor Fritz upset top seeds to enter last four at Indian Wells

(Tennis news) In men’s singles, Taylor Fritz made a stunning comeback in the final set to upset four time Masters 1000 winner Alexander Zverev at Indian Wells. The American is making his first semifinals at this level and hadn't gone past the fourth round. After losing the first set, Fritz took time to get through Zverev’s defense as he took the second set with a quick reflex backhand volley. In the final set, Fritz saved two match points and his perseverance finally paid off as he secured victory in the tiebreaker. Fritz defeated Zverev 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(7-3).

 

Nikoloz Basilashvili beat Stefanos Tsitsipas as his strokes were too fast for the Greek god. Nikoloz had a rollicking start as he took the first set but then Tsitsipas came back to take the second one. In the final set, Nikoloz was the clear winner from the start as he kept testing Tsitsipas with his heavy groundstrokes and the sudden drop shot drop shot from the forehand. Nikoloz defeated Tsitsipas 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

 

In women’s singles, Paul Badosa stopped the incredible run of Ons Jabeur with a sublime performance in the semifinals. Paul will be making her first final in a WTA 1000 event, she only conceded six games in the match as Jabeur will now make her exit knowing she will make history once the rankings are updated. Paul saved 9 of the 10 breakpoints she faced and landed 69 percent of her first serves. Paul defeated Jabeur 6-3, 6-3.

 

Victoria Azarenka reached the finals for a third time and will look to be the first woman to win the event three times. She had won it in 2012, 2016 and defeated Jelena Ostapenko in the semifinals in a three setter. Ostapenko had the better start as she took the first set but Azarenka rallied hard and came to take the next two sets to win the match. Azarenka defeated Jelena 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

 

In men’s doubles, Andrey Rublev and Aslan Karatsev defeated Michael Venus and Tim Pütz in the semifinals to face John Peers and Filip Polášek in the final. Rublev and Karatsev defeated Venus and Tim 6-3, 4-6, 10-5. John and Filip defeated seventh seeds Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo to progress into the finals. John and Filip defeated Ivan and Marcelo 6-4, 7-6(7-1).

 

In the women’s doubles, Elise Mertens and Hsieh Su-wei will face Veronika Kudermetova and Elena Rybakina in the finals which will be held today.
