(Tennis news) Novak Djokovic will join Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray in Team Europe in the Laver Cup. The event will feature six European players against six from Team World over three days and is set to take place between 23rd to 25th September in London. Team World will feature the likes of Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz and Diego Schwartzman.
Speaking about the Laver Cup, Djokovic said “It's the only [event] where you play in a team with guys you're normally competing against. To be joining Rafa, Roger and Andy – three of my biggest all-time rivals – it's going to be a truly unique moment in the history of our sport." In total, the likes of Djokovic, Federer, Nadal and Murray have a combined total of 66 Grand Slam titles and are favourites to win the Laver Cup, having won it four times in the last four years.
“I don't think I could have imagined having these four icons of the sport on one team together," said Borg who captains Team Europe while his former long-time rival John McEnroe captains Team World. "I know they, like I, appreciate the significance of this moment and will be truly up for it. Each year our goal is to win. With Rafa, Roger, Andy and Novak on the team, I like our chances."
The tournament is named in honour of Australian tennis legend Rod Laver and is played in the O2 Arena on a black court. Since its inception, the Laver Cup has become one of the most prestigious tennis events of the calendar, featuring some of the best players in the world playing alongside each other in a team. Team Europe won in Prague 2017, Chicago 2018, Geneva 2019 and Boston 2021 and will look to secure a victory in the fourth edition as well.
