Anett Kontaveit begins campaign with straight set victory at Akron WTA Finals Guadalajara

(Tennis news) Anett Kontaveit continued her winning run as she beat Barbora Krejcikova in the opening match of Akron WTA Finals Guadalajara. Kontaveit is on a 11 match winning streak and hammered winners across the court as this year’s French Open champion had no answers on the court. Kontaveit only had 6 unforced errors in the first set which showed her clean ball striking as Krejcikova had 18 unforced errors.

In the second set, Kontaveit was on the move as she took a 3-1 lead but then Krejcikova took the next two games to stay just behind her opponent. Kontaveit then took the next game to make it 4-2 as Krejcikova kept trying to level the score but then Kontaveit wrapped up the proceedings in an hour and fifteen minutes.

"During the summer I was on a bit of a losing streak, then I started working with Dmitry Tursunov and was really hoping to get a few wins. I managed to win Cleveland, then it just sort of started rolling from there said Kontaveit.

"I've been believing in myself a little bit more, and the game definitely has clicked from just getting more wins and playing a lot of tennis and really feeling comfortable, enjoying playing tennis."

In a battle of two of the most experienced players, Karlolina Pliskova made it past Garbine Muguruza in their 11th career meeting. Muguruza had last won against Pliskova 4 years ago in Cincinnati and the pair had first met 8 years ago at the French Open.

This is only the fourth time Muguruza has taken a set off Pliskova, the opening set saw Pliskova taking the first two games but Muguruza fought back as she broke Pliskova twice to take the lead. In the second set, Pliskova broke her opponent in the opening game and even took a 4-1 lead as she went on to win the set. In the final set, Muguruza saved two match points in the tenth game at her serve but Pliskova finally won the match in her fourth match point at the tie breaker.

In doubles, Demi Schuurs and Nicole Melichar-Martinez had a sweet first match outing against US Open champions Zhang Shuai and Samantha Stosur as they beat the pair without much difficulty. Demi and Nicole defeated Zhang and Samantha 6-2, 6-2. The Japanese pair of Ena Shibahara and Shuko Aoyama dominated their opening match against Darija Jurak and Andreja Klepač. Ena and Shuko are looking for a season leading 6th title and the pair defeated Jurak and Klepac 6-0, 6-4.
