Kohli Rises to Third on Orange Cap List, Then Slips to Fourth as Suryakumar Surges Ahead

It was a day of swift changes on the IPL 2025 Orange Cap leaderboard during Sunday’s double-header. Virat Kohli briefly climbed to third place after a strong knock against Punjab Kings (PBKS), but by the end of the night, Suryakumar Yadav had overtaken him with a blistering innings against Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Orange Cap Standings Shake Up

Kohli became the fifth batter to cross the 300-run mark this season with a fluent 73* off 54 balls while guiding Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to a seven-wicket win over PBKS. That innings lifted him to third on the list, with 322 runs at an average of 64.40 — the highest among players with more than 150 runs, barring Tim David’s extraordinary 142.00. However, his strike rate of 140.00 remains the lowest among the top five run-scorers.

Later in the day, Suryakumar Yadav stole the show. His unbeaten 68 off just 30 balls propelled Mumbai Indians (MI) to a dominant nine-wicket win over CSK, and also took his season tally to 333 runs — enough to push Kohli down to fourth.

Suryakumar now trails only Nicholas Pooran (368 runs) of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans’ B Sai Sudharsan (365). With Gujarat set to face Kolkata Knight Riders next, Sudharsan needs just four runs to claim the Orange Cap.

Other players over the 300-run mark include Jos Buttler (315) of GT and Yashasvi Jaiswal (307) from Rajasthan Royals. LSG’s Mitchell Marsh, who had long been in the top three, has slipped to seventh with 299 runs.

Purple Cap Stays Unchanged

While the Orange Cap table saw plenty of movement, the Purple Cap standings remained steady on Sunday.

GT’s Prasidh Krishna continues to lead with 14 wickets. Several contenders had a chance to close the gap but couldn’t capitalize — CSK’s Noor Ahmad and Khaleel Ahmed, RCB’s Josh Hazlewood, and MI skipper Hardik Pandya all finished wicketless in their respective matches.

Arshdeep Singh picked up a solitary wicket for PBKS against RCB, moving him up the ranks slightly, but he still remains behind the front-runners.

Kuldeep Yadav (DC), Noor Ahmad, Hazlewood, and Shardul Thakur (LSG) all follow Krishna with 12 wickets each. Five more bowlers — R Sai Kishore, Mohammed Siraj (both GT), Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh, and Khaleel — are close behind with 11 wickets apiece.

The race for both caps remains wide open as the season heats up.
