Sunil Gavaskar's Take on Shreyas Iyer Controversy

(Cricket News) Discussions in the media lately have centered on Shreyas Iyer. Because he chose not to participate in the Ranji Trophy, the 29-year-old was passed over for a central contract by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India), along with Ishan Kishan. Former Indian cricket great Sunil Gavaskar was perplexed by the decision. Iyer reportedly told the team he was not fit to play in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal after his contract was rejected, but the NCA trainers insisted the batter was fit to play.

Regarding the same matter, Sunil Gavaskar stated that he believes each player’s pain threshold is highly subjective and fluctuates. He made it clear that no trainer could truly gauge the level of anguish a player is going through.

Gavaskar stated in his Mid-Day column that “he did miss the quarter-finals, but it was also the time he told the team management of his inability to play the third Test match due to some pain in his back if he batted for some length of time.”

“But, the NCA trainers confirmed that his markers were clear and that he was ready to play. It appeared that this went against Iyer. He continued, “No trainer can determine someone is threshold of discomfort because it is an individual matter.
