Spain’s Stars Rejoice After Euro Final

In the Eurobasket 2025 semifinals, Spain’s women’s basketball team defeated Olympic silver medalists France 65-64 to advance to the final against Belgium.  Their hopes of winning a sixth European championship title are maintained by this victory.

One of the best players, Andrea Vilaro, emphasized the difficulty of defeating one of the best teams in the competition.  “France is one of the best teams here, and to beat them we had to be brave and show who we really are,” she stated.  In order to keep the game close, Vilaro highlighted their defensive emphasis, particularly on limiting fast-break points.  “Sometimes basketball surprises you, and the ball just falls in when you least expect it,” she said.

Vilaro also honored the generations that came before the present team and his former colleagues.  “We’re fired up and determined to go all the way for the gold – that’s exactly why we’re here,” she said.

Maria Araujo, the starting player, commended the younger players’ poise and confidence.  “After the game, a lot of us were emotional.  Given our friendly rivalry, defeating the favorites, France, made this victory even more memorable,” she thought.

Helena Pueyo talked about her delight and confidence after making a pivotal one-legged basket in the last quarter.  “I never thought that in my first Eurobasket, I would be competing for gold.  “I still can’t believe it,” she admitted.

Spain’s leading scorer, Awa Fam, who finished with 21 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists, expressed her happiness at hitting this milestone.  “Playing for the senior national team was one of my goals.  I’ve gotten a lot of support and learnt a lot during the past five years.  I’m so thrilled to be where I’ve always wanted to be,” she remarked.

Spain will play Belgium in the final on Sunday at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Piraeus.  In recent official matchups, such as the 2023 Eurobasket final and the 2024 Olympic quarterfinals in Paris, Belgium has proven to be a formidable opponent, with both finishing in Belgium’s favor.  Spain will be keen to turn around those outcomes and win the title.
