Should Lando Norris consider leaving McLaren after an underwhelming start?

Lando Norris could consider leaving McLaren if the team continues to underperform in the 2023 season

Does Lando Norris' future lie away from McLaren?

(Motorsport) Lando Norris is undoubtedly one of the hottest talents in Formula 1, capable of winning World Championships if he’s given the right car. However, things are not looking good for him at McLaren at all, particularly if the Bahrain Grand Prix is anything to go by as he finished last on the grid due to a pneumatic pressure leak which forced him to pit six times.

To make matters worse, his new teammate Oscar Piastri retired after 14 laps due to an electrical failure in what can only be described as a nightmare start for McLaren. At 23, Norris is entering the prime years of his motor racing career but at McLaren, he’s not being given a platform to exploit his talent and a move away could be beneficial for his career.

Norris is currently under a long term contract at McLaren, which means any move away will be complicated and expensive. It’s interesting if Lando Norris has clauses in his contract that could ensure he can leave if McLaren continue to underperform. He could follow Lewis Hamilton’s footsteps and leave for Mercedes but considering that Hamilton isn’t planning to retire anytime soon and George Russell is doing fairly well under the circumstances, a move to the Silver Arrows seems unlikely.

This leaves Scuderia Ferrari who have Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz in the cockpit. If Norris were to come to Formula 1’s most successful team, it would be for Carlos Sainz as Leclerc is also a future World Champion (in terms of potential) if given the right car and team. A move to Red Bull Racing will be a tricky one, purely because both Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez are performing at such a high level. Verstappen has already won two World Championships in as many years while Sergio Perez finished second in the opening Grand Prix of 2023, which is as good as it gets for the Mexican.

Perez has proved to be a reliable number 2 driver for Christian Horner and replacing Perez for Lando Norris doesn’t make a lot of sense. While Scuderia Ferrari is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious teams in Formula 1, they haven’t won a title in over a decade and are looking unreliable so far. However, the opportunity to drive for Ferrari doesn’t come everyday and it definitely seems like a step up from McLaren at the moment. Do you believe Lando Norris’ future lies elsewhere?
