(Cricket News) The 32-year-old Shane Dowrich was unexpectedly called up to the West Indies team for their forthcoming ODI series against England at home. The Barbadian had played just one ODI, against Ireland in the beginning of 2019, and had a dismal record on the List A, averaging 22 at the bat from 47 games in his 14-year professional career. Until his recall, Dowrich had not participated in any form of international cricket since the West Indies’ tour of New Zealand in late 2020.
“We want to thank Shane for his contribution when he played for West Indies. He is a disciplined, hard-working cricketer who always gave his utmost in front and behind the stumps. He had a memorable series in 2019 when he made an outstanding Test century on home soil in Barbados to help us beat England and win the Wisden Trophy,” said Cricket West Indies director of cricket Miles Bascombe in a statement confirming Dowrich’s retirement from international cricket.
The first West Indies-England ODI is on Sunday in Antigua. As of this writing, Dowrich has not provided a public explanation for his decision to retire from international cricket. The day after his recall last week, Dowrich allegedly “liked” an Instagram post from DJ Bravo criticizing the West Indies selection policy after his half-brother Darren was left off the roster after an outstanding domestic 50-over campaign. The West Indies have not yet called up a replacement for Dowrich.
