(Cricket News) Shakib Al Hasan, who served as the captain of the national team in the 50-over World Cup last year, has received a diagnosis of a retinal condition in his left eye, as reported by the ICC with attribution to the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
Despite this diagnosis, it is anticipated that the condition will not hinder his participation in competitive cricket. The 36-year-old is set to take the field for Rangpur Riders in their upcoming Bangladesh Premier League match against Khulna Tigers on Friday.
Shakib initially reported issues with his eye, leading to consultations with ophthalmologists both in Bangladesh and abroad. Following multiple eye assessments, the final diagnosis revealed a concern with the retina of his left eye. Senior BCB Physician Dr. Debashis Chowdhury explained, “Shakib has been complaining of subtle issues with his left eye. After consulting Ophthalmologists in Bangladesh and abroad and after multiple eye assessments, it was confirmed that he is suffering from Extrafoveal Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSR) of the left eye.
It has been decided that a conservative approach will be adopted for managing the issue for now.” Dr. Chowdhury added, “Extrafoveal Central Serous Chorioretinopathy is a condition that affects the retina, leading to visual disturbances. The medical team overseeing Shakib’s case is optimistic about managing the condition effectively with a conservative approach.”
Following Rangpur Riders’ match against Fortune Barisal on January 20, where they suffered a five-wicket defeat, team captain Nurul Hasan confirmed Shakib’s struggles with his eyesight. Nurul stated, “He (Shakib) has been struggling with eyesight problems for some time now. I think he has been in touch with the doctors regularly. The doctors only could say in what stage the problem is now.”
The Barisal match marked Shakib’s return to competitive cricket after the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he faced a finger injury. In the match against Barisal, he claimed 2 wickets for 16 runs.
