(Football news) Sevilla are kings of the Europa League and they showed it after defeating Roma in the finals. Real Madrid in the Champions League League and Sevilla in the Europa League, are two of the greatest love stories in football. Sevilla’s season has taken a massive turn after a horrific start. In the beginning under Julen Lopetegui, it didn’t go too well which was a surprise as he had been incredibly successful for the past couple of years. He was sacked and replaced by Jorge Sampaoli but even that wasn’t going well. Jose Luis Mendilibar took charge and has done a fantastic job.
The first half was largely dominated by AS Roma as Jose Mourinho’s tactics were looking perfect. Paolo Dybala got the opening goal after being set up by Gianluca Mancini. Roma had a lot of chances before halftime to make it 2 but Sevilla held on. Just before the break, Sevilla turned it on to put more pressure. They started the 2nd half well and finally got the equalizer via Gianluca Mancini’s own goal.
In the 75th minute, Lucas Ocampos won a penalty but VAR overturned it. Jose Mourinho made a bold move by taking off Paolo Dybala and Tammy Abraham which dropped Roma’s level. Both teams had a few chances but in the end, it went to penalties where Sevilla won comfortably by 4-1.
Referee Anthony Taylor had his hands full as he had a lot of pressure on him. Neither team was particularly happy with him. After the game, Jose Mourinho called the referee a disgrace. Sevilla kept a ridiculous La Liga record going after beating Roma. La Liga teams have met non-La Liga teams 18 times in European finals since 2001 and they have won all 18 games. La Liga teams are continuously dominating Europe and next season they will have 5 teams in the Champions League.
