Saka Shines, Arsenal Wins

Arsenal defeated Fulham 2-1 on Tuesday night thanks to a vital goal from Bukayo Saka, who made a spectacular comeback from injury.  Arsenal’s chances of winning the title are revived by this victory, which closes the distance to Premier League leaders Liverpool to nine points.

Saka made his first appearance since December 21st and scored with a strong header after coming off the bench.  He showed his effect almost immediately after returning to the game, scoring after Mikel Merino’s deflected attempt had given Arsenal the lead in the first half.

The night was marred by concern, though, when Gabriel Magalhaes, a vital defender, had to leave due to an injury.  His absence might be crucial, particularly given that the Gunners will play Real Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinals the following week.  At a critical juncture in the season, manager Mikel Arteta’s injury fears have been exacerbated by Gabriel’s hamstring problem.

Rodrigo Muniz’s stoppage-time goal cut the deficit for Fulham, who are vying for a European position, but this loss puts them three points outside of the top five and keeps them in eighth place.

Even though Arsenal won, there were some issues with their performance.  The superb Merino filled the vacuum left by injured talents Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus, but the first half lacked energy and obvious scoring opportunities.  Although Mikel Arteta’s team was able to collect the points, they will need to swiftly settle into a rhythm in order to stay up with Liverpool.

Saka’s comeback is a huge boost for the Gunners going forward as they look to contend for the championship and get ready for their European adventures.  As the campaign for the Premier League title draws to a close, Arsenal, who hold a dominant position in the top five, looks to consolidate their position for Champions League qualification next season.
