Rodri Takes Subtle Dig at Real Madrid

This year’s unexpected winner of the Ballon d’Or was Rodri of Manchester City, who defeated Vinicius Jr. of Real Madrid by just 41 points—one of the smallest margins since the voting system was altered in 2016.

Vinicius was generally seen as the favorite, therefore the Spanish midfielder’s victory was unexpected. Unimpressed with the result, Real Madrid chose to abstain from the esteemed event following the rejection of their star striker.

Rodri made it apparent that he had no qualms about attending the event, even if he was aware of the stress surrounding his victory.

The Manchester City midfielder stressed the importance of showing up, winner or not, in an interview with France Football. He stated, “It’s good to come when your value is recognized at a very high level, whether you end up winning or not”.

Rodri clarified. In addition, the collective element is significant. For instance, Erling (Haaland) had a better chance of winning last year than I did. I wanted to be there to help him during this unique time.

Rodri also emphasized his sportsmanship concept. “It’s important to know how to lose as well as how to win,” he said.

Rodri made a sly remark in response to Real Madrid’s boycott: “What do you want me to tell you? That I would have liked to have everyone present? Naturally, I did.

“Everything was missing, including the second, third, fourth, etc. [but] I must honor everyone’s choice. Even if I hadn’t done the same thing,” he continued.
