(Football news) Liverpool will be hoping to build on their huge victory against Manchester City as they host West Ham United in the Premier League on Wednesday. The visitors were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Southampton. Liverpool's 7-1 thrashing of Rangers at Ibrox in the Champions League was a sign that the Reds were back towards regaining their top form and Jurgen Klopp's side backed that performance to inflict Man City's first defeat of the season at Anfield.
Mohamed Salah also looks to be back in form after scoring the fastest hat-trick in Champions League history at Ibrox and backed that performance with a goal against Manchester City. Given the amount of effort that Liverpool put into the match to claim all three points, it may not be the worst time for West Ham to play them after only 72 hours later. Jurgen Klopp has avoided a touchline ban for now despite being sent off after he reacted very angrily when Salah was denied a foul despite having his shirt pulled by Bernardo Silva, with the English FA wanting to review the incident further before any action is taken against the 55-year-old.
David Moyes meanwhile was left frustrated by West Ham's failure to take all three points away to Southampton, having dominated the encounter at St Mary's. The Hammers had 25 shots alongside 61% possession and 14 corners but they trailed their opponents for almost 45 minutes after Romain Perraud had scored in the 20th minute. Declan Rice leveled the scoreline after the hour mark with an excellent shot from outside of the box but Said Benrahma and Gianluca Scamacca squandered easy chances to snatch all three points late in the match. Moyes will expect a completely different match at Anfield on Wednesday, with his side likely to sit much deeper but he will hope to catch the Reds cold after their titanic match experience against Man City on Sunday.
