(Football news) With 24 points after their first nine games in 2023–24, Los Blancos lead the table, while Sevilla is in 14th place with just 8 points from the same number of games. Diego Alonso, who was officially announced as Sevilla’s new head coach with a contract that runs through the end of the season, will be in the dugout this coming weekend.

Jose Luis Mendilibar, who led the squad to Europa League victory the previous season but was stripped of his duties earlier this month, has been replaced by the 48-year-old.

Sevilla is now in 14th place in La Liga after an unimpressive start to the season with just eight points from eight games. However, they have yet to lose in their Champions League group, drawing their opening two matches against Lens and PSV Eindhoven.

Before the international break, the holders of the Europa League drew 2-2 with Rayo Vallecano in the league. Youssef En-Nesyri equalised the score in the 96th minute of the match at Estadio Ramon.

Sevilla, who placed 12th in La Liga the previous season, will now play two crucial home back-to-back games in the league and Champions League, respectively, against Real Madrid and Arsenal.

Real Madrid has won eight of their nine games and lost one to accumulate 24 points, which has put them at the top of the division, two points ahead of Girona in second place and three ahead of Barcelona in third. At least according to the league table, Real Madrid has been the best team in La Liga thus far this season.

September 24 saw Real Madrid lose 3-1 to Atletico Madrid, a devastating result. However, since then, they have won four straight games, three of which have taken place in La Liga.

In addition to winning 3-2 against Napoli in the Champions League at the beginning of the month to move up to six points in Group C, Los Blancos have scored nine goals and given up zero in their past three league games against Las Palmas, Girona, and Osasuna.

Jude Bellingham, who has scored 10 goals and provided three assists in 10 games in all competitions, has been without a doubt the team’s best player this year. He will be looking to build on his eight goals and two assists from this season in La Liga.

Next week, Real Madrid will play Braga in the Champions League in Portugal. Then, there’s the little matter of travelling to Barcelona for El Clasico on October 28.

For the time being, though, Los Blancos will not be looking past Sevilla as they attempt to defeat Los Nervionenses for a record-tying fifth La Liga triumph.
