(Football news) Real Madrid enter the match after defeating Real Sociedad 2-1 in La Liga, while Union Berlin lost to Wolfsburg 2-1 in their most recent Bundesliga match on Saturday. Real Madrid hasn’t quite been at the top of their game early in the season, but the capital giants have still been very successful, winning five straight games in La Liga to lead the standings with 15 points.

In their first two league games of the season, Carlo Ancelotti’s team defeated Athletic Bilbao and Almeria by two goals each. However, they have only barely won their past three games against Celta Vigo, Getafe, and Real Sociedad, defeating the latter 2-1 on Sunday to reclaim first place.

In spite of the fact that Real Madrid must travel to Atletico Madrid this weekend for the Madrid derby, they are currently concentrating on the Champions League as they try to get off to the best possible start in a group that also contains Braga of Portugal and Napoli of Italy.

With their most recent victory occurring in the 2021–22 season, the Whites have an astonishing 14 European Cup victories, making them by far the most dominant force in the competition’s history.

Last season, Real Madrid competed in the competition’s semi-finals, where they fell to Manchester City. This season, Real Madrid will likely continue to compete in the tournament’s latter rounds.

Union Berlin, on the other hand, finished fourth in the Bundesliga last year with 62 points from their 34 games, securing them for the first time direct qualification for the Champions League group stage.

Die Eisernen participated in the Europa Conference League during the 2021–22 season, but they were unable to go past the group stage, despite making it to the last 16 of the 2022–23 Europa League.

Now Union Berlin will advance to the largest cup competition in European football, and they will enter the match at Bernabeu on the heels of two poor domestic results.

After three straight victories in all competitions, including their first two in the league, Urs Fischer’s team has actually dropped its past two Bundesliga games against RB Leipzig and Wolfsburg. With a total of six points, they are now in eighth place in the standings.

Union Berlin are very much an unknown commodity in this competition, which could benefit them on Wednesday evening, but their home form in the section is likely to determine if they have a real opportunity to advance to the knockout phase of this season’s tournament.
