(Football news) Real Madrid's recruitment board is very busy even though the transfer window isn't open yet. Works on the potential signings of Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland are going on in the background. They have also been linked with Bernardo Silva, Serge Gnabry and Fran Garcia among others.
The latest update is that Real Madrid have reportedly offered Marco Asensio a 4 year old €4.5m + €1.5m in bonuses. Asensio, whose current deal expires in 2023 has been a regular part of the first team ever since 2016. At the beginning he was the hottest young prodigy in world football but an ACL injury in 2019 has had a severe effect on his acceleration which has limited his impact from the wing. Carlo Ancelotti used him in midfield at the start of the current season but had to eventually deploy him on the wing due to lack of right wingers and too much competition in midfield.
Asensio's performances this season have been very inconsistent. He is a trusted member of Ancelotti's side who regularly starts on the left but it would be safe to say that he is better suited in the midfield especially as a proper number 10. If and when Real Madrid signs Kylian Mbappe Asensio will definitely not be the first choice right winger. With Luka Modric coming towards the end of his career, Asensio could slot in as his replacement.
From Real Madrid's point of view it will be a great deal. A player of Asensio's calibre at that rate will be a bargain even if he is a bench player in the future. The good news for them is that Asensio wants to renew his contract and stay at the club. His agents however claim that he has better offers from several English clubs which may just be a negotiating tactic. Liverpool is one of the Premier League clubs in the mix. After this season at Real Madrid, it is very unlikely that Asensio remains a guaranteed starter.
If Asensio is willing to stay and fight it is incredible news for Real Madrid. If the Spaniard manages to rekindle the form he showed between 2016 and 2018, then Real Madrid have managed to get an absolute bargain even though it is a risk. Los Blancos will be hoping that Asensio manages to finish the season on a high before his future can be deliberated.
