(Football news) Real Madrid were officially declared La Liga champions on matchweek 34 itself. They did it in incredible fashion with a flamboyant 4-0 win over Espanyol. In the 33rd minute, Marcelo assisted Rodrygo for the opening goal and 10 minutes later Rodrygo doubled the advantage. In the 2nd half Asensio was set up by Camavinga to make it 3-0 to Real Madrid. Real Madrid's talismanic duo of Vinicius Jr and Karim Benzema combined once again to score Real Madrid's 4th goal of the game which was also Benzema's 46th goal of the season. Real Madrid celebrated the title in classic Madrid fashion but they now have a very difficult task of coming back from a 1 goal deficit against Manchester City in the UCL semi final.
Atletico Madrid once again slipped up in the top 4 race as they lost 2-0 to Athletic Club. It took Bilbao only 8 minutes to score the opening goal as Inaki Williams' cross was inadvertently turned in by Mario Hermoso. Williams then doubled the home side's lead with a spot kick in the 2nd half. Atletico Madrid had 57% possession in the game but couldn't create any big chances. These are very worrying signs for the club who are now just 4 points ahead of Real Betis who have a game in hand. Atletico Madrid host champions Real Madrid next weekend after which they have tough fixtures against Elche, Sevilla and Real Sociedad. A UCL place looks very doubtful for Atléti as Betis are right on their tail.
Barcelona defeated Mallorca 2-1 to further solidify their 2nd position. The win came a day after they officially lost the La Liga title. The Blaugrana took the lead after Jordi Alba assisted Memphis Depay in the 25th minute. The lead was doubled by Sergio Busquets who scored his 2nd league goal of the season. The Catalan club have nothing left to play for apart from a 2nd place finish but these 4 games are very important for Xavi as he can build the foundation for next season. Barcelona have been linked to a few players but for that to happen others will have to leave and it will be interesting to see who Xavi chooses to let go. These remaining matches are a good chance for the players to show the manager what they have to offer.
