(Football news) Thanks to two goals from standout player Kylian Mbappe, the French giants defeated the opposition 2-1 at the Reale Arena on Tuesday, extending their winning streak in the first leg to three weeks at home.
With his first Champions League goal of the game, PSG’s No. 7 got things started. At 25 years and 76 days, he is the second-youngest player to accomplish the milestone, behind only Lionel Messi (24 years and 257 days).
Just before the hour, Mbappe scored his second goal of the two-leg match and his third overall with another brutal finish, giving Luis Enrique’s team the lead.
PSG had blown a first-leg lead in four of their previous nine Champions League knockout ties, but they made no mistake this time around, despite conceding a late goal scored by Mikel Merino, and demonstrated a professional display in San Sebastian to keep their hopes of winning an elusive Champions League trophy alive.
One of the main talking points prior to kickoff revolved around the involvement of Mbappe, who was substituted early in both of PSG’s last two matches. However, the striker – who is set to leave the club at the end of the season upon the expiration of his contract – was named in Enrique’s first XI as the Spaniard made five changes from the side that drew 0-0 with Monaco in Ligue 1 last Friday.
Mbappe quickly made his mark on the match, first curving the opening shot of the match over the bar after a deft one-two with Fabian Ruiz on the edge of the area. Then, he used his lightning speed to get to the byline and cut a cross back to Bradley Barcola, whose first-time attempt in the six-yard box was saved by Alex Remiro from point-blank range.
Ousmane Dembele played a hybrid central role in the first few minutes, which seemed to confound Real Sociedad. Mbappe moved out into the left wing, where he collected the ball and scored a fantastic first goal on the fifteenth minute.
