(Football news) PSG have made an official announcement that their captain Marquinhos has signed a new long term contract which will keep at the club until the summer of 2028. The 29-year-old took over the club captaincy after Thiago Silva left on free transfer to join Chelsea in 2020. Marquinhos this season has scored two goals and assisted one in 42 outings across all competitions starting 29 Ligue 1 games also.
The negotiations for the Brazil international were believed to have been rumbling for quite some time but he has finally agreed to the significant pay rise that he is going to get. Marquinhos will be 34 years by the time his contract runs which means he will spend his peak years at the Parc De Frances. Marquinhos came up through the Corinthians youth academy before joining Roma, on loan in the summer of 2012 before making his stay permanent six months later.
Marquinhos spent just one year at Roma before joining PSG in a £27.3m deal 10 years ago, and since then he has gone on to make 405 appearances for the club in all competitions. The Brazilian sits third in the club’s all-time appearance list behind Marco Verratti (413) and Jean-Marc Pilorget (435), and he has subsequently contributed to 38 goals and 10 assists for Les Parisiens in his time at the club. Marquinhos has an impressive resume at Paris which includes seven Ligue 1 titles, six Coupe de France crowns, six Coupe de la Ligue and eight Trophee des trophies while he also went onto win the Copa America with Brazil in 2019.
The 29-year-old is ever present in the PSG backline and he has been recognised with four inclusions in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year, while he also made the Champions League Team of the Season in 2019-20 and 2020-21 when they reached the Champions League final. Marquinhos is expected to make his 406th appearance for the Club on Sunday against Auxerre, as PSG will aim to move within one point of retaining their Ligue 1 title.
He expressed his pride at signing on the dotted line to the official PSG website, saying: “I am delighted to sign a contract extension, but also very proud. This is a very special moment for me. Paris Saint-Germain has always shown confidence in me, and I also have a lot of confidence in this club. I am convinced that we will continue to achieve great things together in the years to come.”
Club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi also hailed the centre-back’s “winning spirit” and “exceptional” commitment to the Parisiens, whom he has represented since his teenage years. “We are very happy Marquinhos has extended his time with the Paris Saint-Germain family. I remember when he joined the Club at the age of 19. From day one, he showed great dedication and a winning spirit – always fighting for the Paris Saint-Germain jersey,”
Al-Khelaifi added. “His football talent, experience and commitment to the Club are exceptional. I know we will have many more successes together as Marquinhos’ history continues with PSG.”
