Ricky Ponting shared his perspective on Glenn Maxwell’s endeavor to make a comeback to Test cricket for Australia.

Ricky Ponting expressed his opinion, stating, "I'm not in favor; I don't believe he deserves it. However, if he seizes the opportunity to return and accumulates some first-class runs, he may be able to earn his way back in," Ponting conveyed on Channel 7.

As dynamic batsman Glenn Maxwell sets his sights on a potential return to the Australian Test side in 2025, former captain Ricky Ponting holds a different perspective.

According to Ponting, “No one deserves a chance unless you’ve got a truckload of first-class runs behind you. I’m not in favor; he doesn’t deserve it. But, if he gets a chance to go back and make some first-class runs, then he can force his way back in,” Ponting expressed his views on Channel 7.

Despite Maxwell’s prominence as one of the stars in Australia’s triumphant 2023 World Cup campaign, his Test appearances have been limited, totaling only seven matches since his debut in 2013, with his last Test against Bangladesh in 2017. Throughout his career, Maxwell has made just 44 Shield appearances, representing Victoria. Since October 2019, he has participated in the tournament only once. However, he has recently been part of the County Championship, representing Warwickshire this season.

A week ago, Maxwell expressed his desire to be considered for selection in the Australian Test team for the tour to Sri Lanka in 2025. He highlighted his potential value in subcontinental conditions, given his recent form in that region. Maxwell acknowledged the formidable competition within the current Test side, recognizing their World Test champion status and the limited opportunities for new players.

Reflecting on his cricketing journey, Maxwell expressed a wish to play a Test match at home, considering that he had dedicated himself to playing first-class cricket in Australia for several years. Despite the preference for white-ball formats, he acknowledged the circumstances and timing that led to his predominant involvement in limited-overs cricket.

In the dynamic landscape of Australian cricket, Glenn Maxwell’s bid for a Test return is met with varied opinions, including the skepticism voiced by former captain Ricky Ponting. The discussions surrounding Maxwell’s potential Test comeback add an intriguing layer to the ongoing narrative of Australia’s cricketing dynamics.
