Following a solid finish to the season, Oscar Piastri anticipates his McLaren Formula 1 team to be "fighting for more" in 2024.

(Motorsports news) After a challenging beginning with the MCL60, the Woking team successfully implemented a number of modifications starting in the middle of the season, which elevated the vehicle in the rankings. In two grand prix, rookie Piastri finished on the podium and won a sprint race; his teammate Lando Norris was in the top three seven times.

Piastri anticipates that the group will be competitive right away in every venue and carry over that kind of momentum into the upcoming campaign. He remarked, “I think we’ve experienced a lot more success as a team in the second half of the year.” We’re definitely planning to push for even more next year, or at the absolute least, to have every weekend be as enjoyable as this one has been. However, I’m sure Ferrari and Mercedes share the same thought.

We shall so make every effort to begin it a little better than we did this year. In my opinion, I have a lot more experience under my belt. And ideally, I can apply that to whatever role we end up in. Early in 2023, Piastri admitted that he was taking it slow on racing weekends and increasing his speed in preparation for qualifying. As the year went on and he accumulated more experience, that strategy evolved.

“I think I know a lot more now than I did at the beginning of the year,” he remarked. “In Abu Dhabi, the pace was excellent right away, but there were a lot of mistakes made.” In some ways, I would prefer it that way rather than trying to qualify with a few tenths off but not knowing how I’m going to do it. In contrast, sort of, to the second half of the year, when any gaps are typically the result of errors rather than inadequacies pace.

I believe that there is still work to be done in the races. It seems like I’m making progress. however I’m content with how I’m going. He went on to explain what he still didn’t know, saying, “These tires are not simple. In some circumstances, this car is difficult. Every grand prix is somewhat of a novel experience. Now that I’ve driven this car around every circuit, I can anticipate things a little better next year. Every race has seemed to have given me a lot more knowledge than when I first entered it.

So maybe that can be a little more robust the following year.
